Photo special: www kat eat kinson co uk

Here's a snap I took a couple of months back of a billboard near my office:

The web address on the billboard advert reads www.kateatkinson.co.uk, with the 'atkinson' in bold

This advert's interesting because of the subtle use of bold in the web address. It's easy to separate www.kateatkinson.co.uk into its component parts:

www
kate
atkinson
co
uk

With www.kateatkinson.co.uk (the unbolded version), the task is much harder and a reader may well come up with (for example):

www
kat
eat
kinson
co
uk

(Kate Atkinson is an English novelist; I think this advert was promoting her latest novel, When Will There be Good News?.)

It's a pity that the companies PublishIt, Who Represents and Therapist Finder forgot that bold, spaces and medial capitals all get omitted in URLs. They all exist (google by putting .com at the end).

There's a lot of it about. Cars with the dealer sticker www.cargiant.co.uk make me do a double take... What is a 'cargiant'?

It happens with 'proper' words too: I always read 'shopfitter' as 'shoplifter' the first time.

Yeah, I saw one of these the other day for Massachusetts Materials Exchange, which turns into materialsexchange.org. Ooo, too bad.

You may have noticed that this blog is called The Engine Room but has engineroomblog in its URL - that's because I decided that theengineroom just looked too weird...
