Cook for 12-20 minutes. Maybe

Cooking instructions for a Morrisons 10" fresh vegetable pizza:

Cooking appliances vary. These instructions are given only as a guide.

Make sure that the food is piping hot throughout before serving.

Place pizza on a baking tray and cook in a pre-heated oven at 200°C, 400°F, Gas Mark 6 for 12-20 minutes.

The pizza is handmade and so probably doesn't conform to a precise shape or thickness - but 12 to 20 minutes? An instruction such as "cook until the cheese melts and starts to brown" would be more useful (to anyone unsure of how to cook pizza, that is).

I usually ignore the time it takes to cook and wait til the pizza looks the way I like it. :P

'These instructions are only given as a guide' ... 'make sure the food's piping hot' ... '12-20 minutes' ... Has someone sued Morrisons recently for pizza poisoning or something?

Only chavs and pikeys shop at Morrisons - they'd probably eat it raw anyhow.

Chavs, pikeys... and me!

What's wrong with eating raw pizza anyway?

Excuse me, I suddenly don't feel so well.

Well, not everyone likes their pizza at the same done-ness. I read that as saying "no less than 12 or it won't be safe, no more than 20 or it will be burnt".

Reminds me of a joke in 'The Tape' episode of Seinfeld.

"Kramer: How often do you cut your toe nails?

Jerry: I would say every two and a half to eight weeks."

Whether or not the oven is fan-assisted makes a significant difference to cooking time, as does the food's position in the oven. Even within oven types there's a fair bit of variation in efficiency, so maybe whoever wrote the instructions is trying to accommodate all these factors without writing them down.

I agree, though, that a description of what you should expect to see (cheese melting, etc.) would be useful.

Often instructions give one cooking time for fan-assisted ovens and another for non-fan ovens. I don't think that's too confusing...

Mind you, I can see Morrisons coming up with something like 'cook for 12-18 minutes in a fan-assisted oven or 14-20 minutes in a regular oven', which is less helpful.

I have tried baking chocolate cake following the specified print on my oven and unfortunately my cake turned out to be a cookie! I guess the combination of how it smells and how it looks will tell you when it is cooked - or so?!
